Today marked the first discussion of Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying. I came into class with a theory about which characters are the embodiment of the natural world, and which were part of this new world. Among a few other ideas I had, this was shot down immediately. I guess I’ll have to dig a little deeper for next week. While it was tricky adjusting to his type of narration, I believe that there is a lot to be taken from this narrative… just not anything that I’ve found. Our professor read us a passage where it acknowledges the allusion of the title—the recollection of Agamemnon’s death in the Odyssey. I wish I understood this coming into the book.
I’m typing next to some freshman, wondering if I was ever this annoying. They’re a pretty decent crew, though, and we even have another lit student in the mix!
